INTRODUCTORY

The unusual and ingenious humanist Giulio Camillo devoted all his life to the realization of an idea that has kept its power of fascination after centuries: building a "machine of knowledge" capable of reassuming and reorganizing the whole universe through simbols and allegories, in a net of words, immages, ideas, analogical relationships and ermeneutical keys.

This is the " Theatre knowledge ", according to Maurizio Calvesi, sending back to the fundamental discovery of the camillian text " Theatro della Sapientia " by Corrado Bologna.

Camillo's idea materialised itself in a real theatre built for Frances I king of France and misteriously disappeared in the second half of the fifteenth century: but the virtual theatre dreamt by Giulio Camillo, enciclopedia of knowledge and mythical image of the universe, was a reality capable of a deep influence on the culture and the artists of its time.

The students of the Institute of Art History of " La Sapienza " University of Rome, have studied the culture and the artists of that time under the guidance of Stefano Colonna, who organised interdisciplinary seminars: this resulted in an impressive research project aimed at the reproduction of " the world of images that constitute the bone structure of the theatre, researcing the iconografies realised in painting as well as the testimonies of the litterary sources ". During this task Art historians amongst whom, Maurizio Calvesi, and an expert of camillian studies of the value of Corrado Bologna, incouraged and assisted the students.

In the second day of the seminar and during the congress, the reconstruction of the work of Camillo was attempted thanks to the aid of the most recent telematic tecnologies: multimediality and hypertextuality, which were particularly effective because of the special nature of the camillian text.

For a correct historical comprehension of the virtual world of Giulio Camillo an attempt to humanise, in the fifteenth century acceptation of the term, the new system of knowledge and culture that is bearing around the Internet (Stefano Colonna).

In the hope that the intimate collaboration between technology and humanistic culture will bring good results to science and knowledge.
